Why Surrogacy? Why You? Why Now?
Why Surrogacy? Why You? Why Now?
For many women, the idea of becoming a surrogate doesn't arrive overnight.
It's often something that lingers in the back of their mind for years. Maybe it first crossed your mind while holding your newborn. Maybe you watched a friend struggle with infertility, or perhaps you've always known someone who built their family through IVF or surrogacy. Whatever planted the seed, the question eventually becomes:
Could I really do this?
At Vermont Surrogacy Network, we hear that question almost every day. And while every woman's story is different, the answer doesn't begin with whether you can become a surrogate.
It begins with asking yourself a different question:
Why now?
Surrogacy Isn't About Loving Pregnancy
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that every surrogate absolutely loves being pregnant.
The truth?
Many do. Some don't.
While enjoying pregnancy certainly helps, it's not what makes someone an incredible surrogate. We've worked with women who didn't particularly enjoy being pregnant, yet they described surrogacy as one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives.
What they loved wasn't the morning sickness, swollen feet, or heartburn.
They loved the purpose.
They loved knowing they were giving another family something they couldn't achieve on their own.
For them, the reward wasn't the pregnancy itself—it was watching intended parents meet their baby for the very first time.
The Right Time Looks Different for Everyone
One of the reasons women hesitate to reach out is because they think they need to have everything perfectly figured out first.
You don't.
But you should ask yourself some honest questions.
- Is my home life stable?
- Do I have reliable support from family or friends?
- Is my partner supportive, if I have one?
- Are my finances stable?
- Do I have any major life changes or extended travel planned?
- Can I be flexible with appointments during the beginning of the process?
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes the answer is, "Not yet."
And that's okay.
Surrogacy doesn't have to happen this year simply because you're interested today. Many women tell us they've thought about becoming a surrogate for five, seven, or even ten years before life finally lined up.
Waiting until the timing feels right isn't a failure.
It's making a thoughtful decision for both your family and the family you'll be helping.
Your Family Is Part of the Journey Too
Surrogacy isn't an individual decision.
It's a family decision.
If you have children, they're going to experience this journey alongside you.
Younger children may simply understand that "Mommy is helping another family."
Older children often have more questions.
Talking openly with your family before beginning the process helps everyone feel included and supported.
Likewise, if you have a spouse or partner, they need to be fully on board with the journey. Their encouragement becomes an important part of your support system throughout the process.
If you're single?
That's absolutely okay too.
Many successful surrogates are single mothers with strong support networks of family and friends. What matters most isn't your relationship status—it's having people in your corner.
What Actually Makes Someone Eligible?
Many women assume they're automatically disqualified before they ever speak with someone.
In reality, eligibility is much more personal than checking a few boxes.
Generally, you'll need to have:
- At least one healthy full-term pregnancy
- A stable home environment
- A healthy uterus with no more than three previous C-sections
- A BMI that meets your chosen fertility clinic's guidelines
- Good overall physical and emotional health
- The ability to attend appointments and follow a treatment schedule
Every fertility clinic has slightly different medical requirements, which is why speaking with an experienced agency matters.
Instead of immediately saying "yes" or "no," we help women understand what options may be available to them.
What About BMI?
Weight is one of the topics women worry about most.
After having children, our bodies change.
That's normal.
Some clinics have stricter BMI requirements than others, while others are more flexible.
If your BMI is currently higher than a clinic allows, that doesn't necessarily mean your surrogacy journey is over before it begins.
We've worked with women who wanted to improve their health and safely reach a clinic's requirements. Sometimes the answer isn't "no."
Sometimes it's simply, "Let's make a plan."
Mental Health Doesn't Automatically Disqualify You
This is another area surrounded by misinformation.
Many women assume that if they've ever experienced anxiety or depression, they'll never qualify.
That's simply not true.
Mental health is evaluated thoughtfully and individually.
For some women, anxiety was related to a specific life event years ago. Others may have taken medication temporarily and are no longer using it.
Those situations are very different from someone managing an ongoing chronic condition that requires continuous treatment.
Every surrogate completes a psychological evaluation as part of the process, but that evaluation exists to ensure everyone involved—especially the surrogate—is healthy, supported, and prepared for the journey.
At Vermont Surrogacy Network, we believe conversations matter more than algorithms.
You're a person, not a checkbox.
What Does the Process Really Look Like?
Many women imagine surrogacy means constant appointments and endless travel.
The reality is a little different.
The beginning of the journey is the busiest.
Medical screenings, legal contracts, fertility clinic appointments, medications, and embryo transfer require flexibility and planning.
Once pregnancy is established and you've entered the second trimester, life becomes much more familiar.
You'll attend regular prenatal appointments just as you did during your own pregnancies.
The biggest difference is that you'll be sharing those moments with intended parents—whether that means inviting them to appointments, sending updates, or celebrating milestones together.
Who Becomes a Surrogate?
One of our favorite questions.
Because the answer surprises people.
We've worked with:
- Stay-at-home moms
- Nurses
- Attorneys
- Teachers
- Business owners
- Healthcare professionals
- Women from cities
- Women from rural communities
- Women in their twenties
- Women in their forties
Different careers.
Different personalities.
Different backgrounds.
The one thing they all have in common?
They genuinely want to help someone else experience parenthood.
They're nurturers by nature.
It's Never Just About Compensation
Yes, surrogates receive compensation.
And they absolutely should.
Pregnancy requires time, commitment, flexibility, and physical sacrifice.
But the idea that women become surrogates only for money simply doesn't match reality.
Every surrogate we've met talks about something much bigger.
They remember holding their own baby for the first time.
They remember the overwhelming joy.
And they want another family to experience that exact moment.
The compensation acknowledges the commitment.
The purpose is what carries women through the journey.
Why Matching Matters So Much
Not every surrogate wants the same kind of relationship with intended parents.
Some hope to remain lifelong friends.
Others prefer occasional updates.
Some intended parents dream of maintaining contact.
Others desire a little more privacy.
Neither approach is wrong.
The key is finding the right match.
That's why matching shouldn't be based on who has been waiting the longest or who fits into an algorithm.
It should be based on personalities, communication styles, expectations, and shared values.
When those pieces align, the journey becomes something truly special.
Why Transparency Matters
If you've been researching surrogacy online, you've probably seen big promises.
"Earn up to $100,000!"
What those advertisements often don't explain is that "up to" doesn't represent the typical experience.
Understanding your actual base compensation, additional reimbursements, and how compensation is structured is far more valuable than chasing a headline number.
Just as important is knowing you can ask questions—and receive honest answers.
You deserve to understand every part of the process before making a decision.
So... Why You? Why Now?
If you've found yourself reading this far, perhaps surrogacy has been on your heart for longer than you realized.
Maybe this is the first time you've seriously considered it.
Maybe it's something you've quietly thought about for years.
Whatever brought you here, you don't have to decide today.
You don't even have to apply today.
Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation.
Ask your questions.
Share your concerns.
Learn what the process really looks like.
Whether you ultimately decide surrogacy is right for you or not, you'll walk away with honest information and a clearer understanding of your options.
At Vermont Surrogacy Network, that's exactly where every journey begins—with a conversation, not a commitment.
If becoming a surrogate has been on your heart, we'd love to meet you, answer your questions, and help you discover whether now is the right time.
Because sometimes the biggest life-changing journeys begin with one simple question:
Why not?
