A Surrogate’s Journey: Brooke Shares Her Empowering Experience
Becoming a surrogate is a deeply personal and life-changing decision. Every journey is unique, filled with moments of beauty, challenge, and incredible purpose. In this special interview, we sat down with Brooke, one of our Vermont Surrogacy Network surrogates, to hear her powerful story in her own words.
Finding the Calling
For Brooke, surrogacy was something she always felt drawn to, even before she fully understood how unique that was.
“I always felt willing to help. Whenever we knew people with fertility struggles, I offered to help, even offering my eggs if needed. It wasn’t until I went through this process that I realized how many people say, ‘I could never do that.’ But for me, it just felt natural.”
Her love of pregnancy made her a perfect fit.
“Being pregnant with my own children was soul-boosting for me. Surrogacy gave me that same joy, with an added sense of purpose.”
Building Bonds with the Intended Family
One of the most beautiful aspects of Brooke’s journey was the relationship she built with the intended parents.
“We really bonded. Our kids were around the same age, so we did things together, we went to the aquarium, and spent time as families. It made everything feel so natural.”
The intended parents already had two children but faced secondary infertility due to a hysterectomy. Brooke’s gift allowed them to grow their family once more.
Navigating the Unexpected
While much of the pregnancy went smoothly, Brooke encountered medical challenges late in her journey. At 20 weeks, she was diagnosed with placenta previa, and at 30 weeks she experienced her first bleed, requiring hospitalization.
“At 35 weeks, I had a major bleed and underwent an emergency C-section. It was scary, but I stayed calm. I knew everything would be okay.”
Despite the unplanned delivery, Brooke’s strength never wavered. The baby, while born early, was healthy and thriving after brief specialized care.
“I’m proud of how I handled everything. I stayed positive, calm, and focused. Even after such a traumatic moment, I would do it all again.”
Support Every Step of the Way
Throughout her surrogacy journey, Brooke praised the support she received from Vermont Surrogacy and her care team.
“The agency made the process so smooth and easy for me. There’s so much involved, legal, financial, medical. I couldn’t have handled all that on my own.”
She also credited her husband and family for their unwavering support.
“My husband was fully on board from the beginning. Having support at home and through the agency was so important.”
An Empowering Experience
Surrogacy gave Brooke something unexpected: personal empowerment.
“I’m a stay-at-home mom. I don’t have a career or college degree. But surrogacy gave me a sense of purpose that was just for me. It was empowering.”
When asked if she would do it again, her answer was immediate:
“Absolutely. Once a surrogate, always a surrogate. It’s still on my heart.”
Advice for Future Surrogates
Brooke offered thoughtful advice to women considering becoming surrogates:
“Be well-educated. Know it may not work right away. Have strong support around you, both through your agency and at home. It’s beautiful, but it can be hard too. Having support makes all the difference.”
Lifelong Connections
Even after delivery, Brooke and the intended parents remain in touch, exchanging updates and milestone photos.
“We still message about once a month. The mom sends me photos of the baby’s milestones, it’s amazing to still be part of their story.”
Brooke’s journey reminds us that surrogacy isn’t just about creating life, it’s about creating connection, healing, empowerment, and hope.
